Good Meat, producers of the world’s first cell-cultivated chicken sold to consumers and a subsidiary of Eat JUST, has raised US$170M in new funding. GOOD Meat plans to use the funds to increase capacity of its cultivated meat production, in addition to furthering research and development.

The company was the world’s first to receive regulatory approval to sell cultivated chicken to consumers in December 2020 in Singapore, appearing on the menu of Singaporean restaurant 1880 before the end of the year. Dishes featuring GOOD Meat chicken are now also available for home delivery through the same restaurant.

As part of the funding announcement, GOOD Meat also announced that a new restaurant, the JW Marriott Singapore South Beach’s Madame Fan, will be serving the company’s cultivated chicken. The Madame Fan team said it will completely replace its conventional chicken with GOOD Meat’s cultivated version at certain times of the day. Initially, GOOD Meat will replace conventional chicken for delivery items ordered on Thursdays and will be available for once-a-week dine-in “starting soon.”

Although Singapore is so far the only jurisdiction to give regulatory approval for the sale of a cultivated meat product, it seems likely that more products produced via cellular agriculture will become available to consumers in the near future. Cellular agriculture companies worldwide are clamouring to launch products to market by the end of 2021, with multiple confirming they are in promising conversations with various food regulators.
